The state's center of gravity: downtown Indianapolis, the Speedway in May, and a ring of Hamilton County suburbs that keep growing. Almost everything here sits within a half hour of everything else.
Start with Indy, Fishers, Carmel, or Noblesville, then build the day around the meal, event, park, or game that makes it worth leaving the house. The towns sit close enough that crossing from one to the next barely costs you time.

The metro covers Marion, Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson and Boone counties. Indianapolis anchors it with Monument Circle, Mass Ave and the Cultural Trail, and Broad Ripple is worth its own evening for Rene's Bakery. Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield add the Monon Trail, Conner Prairie and Ruoff Music Center. Speedway has the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the month of May, while Zionsville, Greenwood and Brownsburg keep a slower main street within reach, from WAMMfest to Mandy's Ice Cream.
